Basic Commands

AutoCAD Tutorials

Lines | Circles | Arcs | Rectangles | Polylines | Polygons | Splines | Project

In this quick tutorial I will show you how to use the line command.

Line Command

The Line Command

The Line Command is the most common command you will use within AutoCAD, lines generally make up the majority of a drawing, so it's important to know what you can do with a line.

A line, can be drawn between any two points within autoCAD, and the program will draw a straight line between them.

So let's try that, simply open up a new drawing in AutoCAD to do this go

  • file > New

Now, we will enter the Line Command:

  • Type L and then ENTER

Notice, autoCAD has promted you to select the first point

AutoCAD Command Bar

Click anywhere on your screen to select the first point. You screen should look something like this:

A Simple Line

Select the next point of the line, by again, simple clicking anywhere on the screen. Notice, that line has now become a new "object" within the drawing.

By deafult CAD retains the line command until cancelled

However, by default AutoCAD keeps the Line Command selected until you cancel the command. you can keep clicking away to create more lines, all of which will be separate selectable lines (objects) within the drawing.

Sequence:

  • L > ENTER
  • Click left mouse to pick 1st point
  • Click left mouse to pick 2nd Point
  • ENTER or ESC to end command

This gives you a brief introduction to the line command, next its onto drawing Circles.
